Pan~ca koshas

The soul has three outer covering / sharIras or five sheaths around it. They are: *Annamaya kosham

*Pranayama kosham

*Manonmaya kosham

*Vijyanamaya kosham

*Anandhamaya kosham

These koshas are classified in to three sharIras :

Physical - annamaya kosham

Subtle – pranamaya, manonmaya , vij~yanamaya kosham

Casual – Anandhamaya kosham

The annamaya kosham is nothing but the physical body we always care about . All the koshas act only for this body when it is awake.

The next three koshas are active when one is in dream state.

The only kosha active when one is asleep is the Anandhamaya Kosham.

These five [kosas] are the five employed in the worship of the five deities. These five are, according to the JNAnArnava, "SrividyA, Paramjyotis, ParA, Niskalasambhavi, and the AjapAmantra, and these five in the SriChakra, the last four [Paramjyotis, etc] are to be worshipped individually and collectively in the Srsti and other cakras which are surrounding [the Sricakra]. But the SrividyA is the bindu in the centre. Thus she is in the midst of the five sheaths.

sanjaya uvaca
evam ukto hrsikeso
gudakesena bharata
senayor ubhayor madhye
sthapayitva rathottamam

SYNONYMS

sanjayah uvaca--Sanjaya said; evam--thus; uktah--addressed; hrsikesah--Lord Krsna; gudakesena--by Arjuna; bharata--O descendant of Bharata; senayoh--of the armies; ubhayoh--both; madhye--in the midst; sthapayitva--placing; ratha-uttamam--the finest chariot.

TRANSLATION

Sanjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, having thus been addressed by Arjuna,Lord
Krsna drew up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is 1.23

yotsyamanan avekse 'ham
ya ete 'tra samagatah
dhartarastrasya durbuddher
yuddhe priya-cikirsavah


SYNONYMS

yotsyamanan--those who will be fighting; avekse--let me see; aham--I; ye--who; ete--those; atra--here; samagatah--assembled; dhartarastrasya--the son of Dhrtarastra; durbuddheh--evil-minded; yuddhe--in the fight; priya--well; cikirsavah--wishing.

TRANSLATION:

Let me see those who have come here to fight, wishing to please the evil-minded son of Dhrtarastra.

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is 1.21-22

arjuna uvaca

senayor ubhayor madhye
ratham sthapaya me 'cyuta
yavad etan nirikse 'ham
yoddhu-kaman avasthitan

kair maya saha yoddhavyam
asmin rana-samudyame

SYNONYMS

arjunah--Arjuna; uvaca--said; senayoh--of the armies; ubhayoh--of both the parties; madhye--in between them; ratham--the chariot; sthapaya--please keep; me--my; acyuta--O infallible one; yavat--as long as; etan--all these; nirikse--may look; aham--I; yoddhu-kaman--desiring to fight; avasthitan--arrayed on the battlefield; kaih--with whom; maya--by me; saha--with; yoddhavyam--to fight with; asmin--in this; rana--strife; samudyame--in the attempt.

TRANSLATION:

Arjuna said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies so that I may see who is present here, who is desirous of fighting, and with whom I must contend in this great battle attempt.

Bhagavad-Gita as it is 1.20

atha vyavasthitan drstva
dhartarastran kapi-dhvajah
pravrtte sastra-sampate
dhanur udyamya pandavah
hrsikesam tada vakyam
idam aha mahi-pate


SYNONYMS

atha--thereupon; vyavasthitan--situated; drstva--looking upon; dhartarastran--the sons of Dhrtarastra; kapi-dhvajah--one whose flag is marked with Hanuman; pravrtte--while about to engage; sastra-sampate--the arrows released; dhanuh--bow; udyamya--after taking up; pandavah--the son of Pandu (Arjuna); hrsikesam--unto Lord Krsna; tada--at that time; vakyam--words; idam--these; aha--said; mahi-pate--O King.

TRANSLATION:

O King, at that time Arjuna, the son of Pandu, who was seated in his chariot, his flag marked with Hanuman, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows, looking at the sons of Dhrtarastra. O King, Arjuna then spoke to Hrsikesa [Krsna] these words:

Bhagvad-Gita as it is 1.19

sa ghoso dhartarastranam
hrdayani vyadarayat
nabhas ca prthivim caiva
tumulo 'bhyanunadayan


SYNONYMS

sah--that; ghosah--vibration; dhartarastranam--of the sons of Dhrtarastra; hrdayani--hearts; vyadarayat--shattered; nabhah--the sky; ca--also; prthivim--the surface of the earth; ca--also; eva--certainly; tumulah--uproarious; abhyanunadayan--by resounding.

TRANSLATION:

The blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious, and thus, vibrating both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhrtarastra.

ananta-vijayam--the conch named Ananta-vijaya; raja--the king; kunti-putrah--the son of Kunti; yudhisthirah--Yudhisthira; nakulah--Nakula; sahadevah--Sahadeva; ca--and; sughosa-manipuspakau--the conches named Sughosa and Manipuspaka; kasyah--the King of Kasi (Varanasi); ca--and; parama-isu-asah--the great archer; sikhandi--Sikhandi; ca--also; maha-rathah--one who can fight alone against thousands; dhrstadyumnah--Dhrstadyumna (the son of King Drupada); viratah--Virata (the prince who gave shelter to the Pandavas while they were in disguise); ca--also; satyakih--Satyaki (the same as Yuyudhana, the charioteer of Lord Krsna); ca--and; aparajitah--who were never vanquished before; drupadah--Drupada, the King of Pancala; draupadeyah--the sons of Draupadi; ca--also; sarvasah--all; prthivi-pate--O King; saubhadrah--the son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu); ca--also; maha-bahuh--mighty-armed; sankhan--conchshells; dadhmuh--blew; prthak prthak--each separately.

TRANSLATION:

King Yudhisthira, the son of Kunti, blew his conchshell, the Ananta-vijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughosa and Manipuspaka. That great archer the King of Kasi, the great fighter Sikhandi, Dhrstadyumna, Virata and the unconquerable Satyaki, Drupada, the sons of Draupadi, and the others, O King, such as the son of Subhadra, greatly armed, all blew their respective conchshells.

MAHA-VAKHYAS

Brahma satyam Jagan MithyA - Brahman is real ; World is unreal ;

Prajanam Brahma - Brahman is Supreme Knowledge ;
Tat tvam Asi - That is what you are ;
Ayam Atma Brahma - This Atma is Brahman
Aham BrahmAsmi - I am Brahman ;
Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma - All of this is Brahman ;

Bhagavad-gītā 1.15

pāñcajanyaḿ hrsīkeśo
devadattaḿ dhanañjayaḥ
paundraḿ dadhmau mahā-śańkhaḿ
bhīma-karmā vrkodarah


SYNONYMS:

pancajanyam--the conchshell named Pancajanya; hrsika-isah--Hrsikesa (Krsna, the Lord who directs the senses of the devotees); devadattam--the conchshell named Devadatta; dhanam-jayah--Dhananjaya (Arjuna, the winner of wealth); paundram--the conch named Paundra; dadhmau--blew; maha-sankham--the terrific conchshell; bhima-karma--one who performs herculean tasks; vrka-udarah--the voracious eater (Bhima).

TRANSLATION:

Lord Krsna blew His conchshell, called Pāñcajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhīma, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell, called Paundra.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.14

tatah śvetair hayair yukte
mahati syandane sthitau
mādhavah pāndavaś caiva
divyau śańkhau pradadhmatuh


SYNONYMS:

tatah--thereafter; svetaih--by white; hayaih--horses; yukte--being yoked; mahati--in a great; syandane--chariot; sthitau--so situated; madhavah--Krsna (the husband of the goddess of fortune); pandavah--Arjuna (the son of Pandu); ca--also; eva--certainly; divyau--transcendental; sankhau--conchshells; pradadhmatuh--sounded.

TRANSLATION:

On the other side, both Lord Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.13

tatah śańkhāś ca bheryaś ca
panavānaka-gomukhāḥ
sahasaivābhyahanyanta
sa śabdas tumulo 'bhavat


TRANSLATION:

After that, the conchshells, drums, bugles, trumpets and horns were all suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.12

tasya sañjanayan harsaḿ
kuru-vrddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
siḿha-nādaḿ vinadyoccaiḥ
śańkhaḿ dadhmau pratāpavān


TRANSLATION:

Then Bhīṣma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving Duryodhana joy.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.11

ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu
yathā-bhāgam avasthitāḥ
bhīṣmam evābhirakṣantu
bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi


TRANSLATION:

All of you must now give full support to Grandfather Bhīṣma, as you stand at your respective strategic points of entrance into the phalanx of the army.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.10

aparyāptaḿ tad asmākaḿ
balaḿ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam
paryāptaḿ tv idam eteṣāḿ
balaḿ bhīmābhirakṣitam


TRANSLATION:

Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma, whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.

Bhagavad-gītā 1.9

anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā
mad-arthe tyakta-jīvitāḥ
nānā-śastra-praharaṇāḥ
sarve yuddha-viśāradāḥ


TRANSLATION:

There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.

TRANSLATION:

There are personalities like yourself, Bhisma, Karna, Krpa, Asvatthama, Vikarna and the son of Somadatta called Bhurisrava, who are always victorious in battle.

TRANSLATION:

But for your information, O best of the brāhmaṇas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.

yudhāmanyuś ca vikrānta
uttamaujāś ca vīryavān
saubhadro draupadeyāś ca
sarva eva mahā-rathāḥ


TRANSLATION:

There are the mighty Yudhāmanyu, the very powerful Uttamaujā, the son of Subhadrā and the sons of Draupadī. All these warriors are great chariot fighters

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

Bhagawan Uvacha:-

Om ithyaksharam Brahma,
Vyaharan maam anusmaran,
Ya prayathi thyajan deham,
Sa Yathi Pramamam gathim. 1(8-13)

The God said:-

He who , meditates on me, As “Om”, which in Brahman, While leaving this ephemeral body,
Will surely attain the most supreme state.

Arjuna Uvacha:-

Sthane Hrisikesa, Thava prakeerthya,
Jagath prahrushthya anurajyathe cha,
Rakshamsi bheethani diso dravanthi,
Sarve namasyanthi cha sidha sangha. 2(11-36)

Arjuna said:-

In this state, Oh Lord, Singing about you.The world is happy and is rejoicing,
To see the evil ones flying away with fear , And all those devoted ones saluting you.

(This is told after seeing the Viswa Roopa of the Lord)

Bhagawan Uvacha:-

Sarvatha pani padam thath,
Sarvatho akshi siro mukham,
Sarvatha sruthimalloke,
Sarvamavithya thishtahi. 3(13-14)

The God said:-

It has hands and legs everywhere, It has eyes head and mouth everywhere, It has ears everywhere in this world, And it exists as every thing in this world.

Kavim purana anusasithara-,
Manoramaneeyaam samanusmaredhya,
Sarvasya dhataram machinthya roopa-
Madithya varnam thamasa parasthath. 4(8-9)

Think of Him , as ancient, spread everywhere, Ruler of all, much subtler part of an atom,
Protector of all with his form which is beyond thought, With the colour of Sun and transcendental beyond dark thoughts.

Oordhwamoolamadha sakham,
Aswatham prahooravyayam,
Chandamsi yasya parnani,
Yastham Veda sa Vedavith. 5(15-1)

With roots above and branches Growing down, This Banyan tree with Vedas as its leaves, Is everlasting and immortal, And whosoever knows it, really knows the Vedas.

Sarvasya chaham, hrudhi sannivishto,
Matha smrithir jnana mapohanam cha,
Vedaischa sarvaii , rahameva Vedhyo,
Vedanthakruth veda vidheva chaham. 6(15-15)

I live in everybody’s heart, And from me one gets, Memory , wisdom and forgetfulness, And for all the Vedas , I am the one that is to be known, For I created them and I am the one who knows them.

Manmana bhava Mad bhaktho,
Madhyajee maam Namakuru,
Mamevaishyasi sathyam they,
Prathijane priyo asi may. 7(18-65)

Concentrate your mind on me, Always show devotion to me,Sacrifice for me, salute me, And I swear to you because you are dear to me, That definitely you will reach me.

Aaham sarvasya prabhavo,
Matha sarvam pravarthate,
Ithi mathwa bhajanthe maam,
Budha bhava samanvitha. 10-8

The wise man with devotion, Sings praises of me understanding that, I am the power behind everything, And everything works because of me.

Math chitha math gatha prana,
Bodayantha parasparam,
Kadayanthascha maam nithyam,
Thooshyanthi cha ramanthi cha. 10-9

The wise men thinking about me, And devoting their lives to me, Talk with each other about me,
And become satisfied and happy.

Tesham sathatha yukthanam,
Bhajatham preethi poorvakam,
Dadahami budhi yogam tham,
Yena maam upayanthi they. 10-10

They always sing my prayers, With love and concentration, And I grant them unified wisdom,
So that they can attain me.

Tesham yevanukambartha,
Aham agnanajam thama,
Nasayamyath mabhavastha,
Jnana deepena bhaswatha. 10-11

With great compassion for them, Dwelling deep in their heart of hearts, I destroy their darkness of ignorance, With a shining lamp of wisdom.

Dwavimou purushou loke,

Two type of men exist,The fallible and infallible, All living things are fallible,And infallible among them are those, Who are merged with the principle of God.


Uthamam purushasthwanya,
Paramathmethyudahyatha,
Yo loka trayamavisya,
Bibhartha vyaya Iswara. 15-17

But greatest among those is another, Supreme self , who is said to be, That lord who is spread all over, And maintains the three parts of the universe.

Yasmath kshara matheetho aham,
Aksharathapi chothama,
Atho asmo loke Vede cha,
Praditha purushothama. 15-18

Because I am beyond the fallible one, And greatest among the infallible ones, The world and the books of Vedas,Call me as the most supreme personality.
