A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'


The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.'
What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?

Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

PENCIL STORY

Parable Of The Pencil - Pencil story...
The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box. "There are 5 things you need to know," he told the pencil, "Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.""
One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in Someone's hand.""
Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better pencil.""
Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.""
Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside.""And
Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write."The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now replacing the place of the pencil with you. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best person you can be.

When we lift a lot of weight we get tried. When we walk a long distance, we get tired. But the mouth and the ears never experience tiredness! We never seem to get tired of talking and listening.The Lord, out of his immense mercy, has created us like this so that we can always chant his Name and listen to His glories.

"If one chants the holy names of the lord, even in helpless conditionor without desiring to do so, all the reactions of his sinful lifedeparts, just as when lion roars, all the small animals flee in fear."

MERE LISTENING NEVER HELPS

Once, a Jnani having 'Realized' the Truth preached it to the people. Having himself struggled and finally 'Realized' the Truth he preached it to the people, day and night. Many lived with him. Days passed and he became old; his health deteriorated. Those with him understood that it was his last moment. All shed tears. They were in deep sorrow. They cried out, "Oh! Great Jnani! Gurudeva! The praiseworthy! "
The Jnani looked at them. He was now in a position where he could utter only a few words. Gathering all the strength left in him he said to them, "I will live only for a few more moments. I can speak only a few words. Ask whatever you desire?"At once the devotees around asked, "How to see God? How to become a Jnani? How to do dhyana?" The Jnani, right from the day he had 'Realized' the Truth to this day of death had been preaching only this - Why and how should one attain God. What is the purpose of life, etc. - The Jnani aghast at their question hit his forehead and said to them, "You people find joy only in listening to such matters - why should one attain God. What is the purpose of life; how to attain God; how to do dhyana - and are not interested in practicing the 'upadesa' (instructions) ." Saying this, he passed away. Thus, man finds joy only in listening over and over again. None brings into practice the words of the Guru. At least this Guru left it at that.
Well! There was another Guru. What were those around him prepared to do? Build an Ashram for the Guru, build a Temple, debate on which Guru was greater, were enthusiastic to celebrate the 60th and the 80th birth anniversary of the Guru, take his picture on procession, print books about him. They did not take effort to bring his 'upadesa' into practice.
Bhagavan Ramana referring to birthday celebration said, 'one should actually weep for having been born. Instead, we are celebrating it!' Bhagavan also said, 'how long have I to carry this body that has to be carried by four?' People require a Guru for their festivity! The Guru should accept the garlands offered by them; the 'pada puja' that they do. This is verily 'spirituality' for them.
Well! In spite of all the folly of the devotees this Guru, out of deep mercy, said to them, "I am in my last moment. If any of you desire I will take you to the highest Mukti (Liberation) state. The state attaining which there is no birth. It is the highest state and there is nothing else to attain." Hearing his words all those around him bent down their heads! None was ready to go with him. They said to him, "No! Gurunatha! We will try and attain this state through effort!" Attachment to the world! It is not easy to give up attachment to the world. Even if one is able to do this it is very difficult to give up attachment to the body. Hence, none was willing to accept the Guru's offer.
The lesson one learns from this is that people are interested only in listening to 'upadesa' and not in attaining the Mukti state that is the final goal, the purpose of life. How to believe that people accept the state of Liberation? Are they really convinced about this state? It has, therefore, become a mere festivity, a form of entertainment! If we listen to or read the 'upadesa' of a Jnani we should bring into practice, at least a little of it, in our day-to-day life.

Jnaana yogena saankhyaanaam karma yogena yoginaam: there are two options ( for a manager) for us to select an option either through learning and teaching like the jnaana yogis or undertaking manual/ technical work as karma yogis.(Bhagavath gita)
* Hato vaa prapsyathi swargam jithwaa vaa bhokshyase maheem: if you are failed in your endeavours even after the best level of input consider that you have done your dharma, and if you are successful enjoy the result and reward.
* Swadharmo nidhanam sreya paradharmo bhayaavaha: It is meritorious (for a manager) to concentrate in our own dharma instead of penetrating into others, which can be dangerous. ( Bhagavath Gita)
* Aacharyaath paadam adatthey paadam sishya swamedhayaa paadam sa brahma charibhya sesham kaalakramena cha: acquire one quarter of the knowledge (of management) from teacher, one quarter from self experience, one quarter from the colleagues and friends and the last one quarter during the process of living (by addition, deletion, modification and corrections- Never depend only on books or teachers- Dharma saastra)
* Amanthra maksharam naasthi naasthi moolam anoushadham: there is no letter (aksharam) which cannot be used for making a manthra and no roots which cannot be used for making a medicinal preparation
* Ayogya purusho naasthi yojaka thathra durlabha: there is none who can be labeled as useless fellow. What is lacking is the coordinators who can make the manthra from the letters (aksharas), the medicinal preparation using appropriate roots, and getting the work done using the efficient workers are scanty (or absent).(Know how to use the resources properly - Dharma saastra)

CRY OUT HIS NAME

In Tiruvannamalai lived a Mahatma by name Yogiramsuratkumar. He was then in Tirukkovilur where is located the ‘Tapovanam’ of Swami Gnanananda. River Pennaiyar flows through this town. Next to the river is the Samadhi of another Mahan called Ragottama Swami. It was his Aradhana day and thousands of devotees were gathered there.
A little boy who went to take bath in the Pennaiyar river, got struck in between two huge rocks in the river. The river was flooded and no one could save him. Panicked, people rushed to Swami Gnanananda and surrendered unto him, requesting him to save the boy.Saying that there was another powerful person carry out that task, Swami Gnanananda summoned Yogiramsuratkumar to save him.
Yogi went to the banks of the river, and swaying his hand-fan, uttered ‘Sri Ram, Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram!’ and behold! The rock broke into a thousand pieces!People asked Yogi, 'Bhagavan! you are capable of doing such miracles!’Yogi replied, ‘No No! This beggar is not capable of doing any miracles. Only Ram Naam is doing miracles!’
In our life we enjoy or suffer depending on our 'paapa' and 'punya'. The imprints of our past deeds (‘prarabda’) follow us.No one's life is filled with just happiness or just sorrow. Life is a mix of both happiness and sorrow.In such a life, when we encounter misery, instead of wailing, if we cry out the name of the Lord, irrespective of the condition and situation, He comes down to help us.

Pattinathaar

Pattinathar attained Jnana in a moment. He was childless for a long time. The couple prayed to Lord Siva and due to the Lord’s blessing they were blessed with a son. Once, Pattinathãr sent his son on a trading trip abroad. In those days people went overseas by ships. At the time of his return there was heavy storm and the worried parents prayed fervently to the Lord for his safe return. On the young son’s return the parents thanked the Lord.
But, after a day or two the father asked the son, ‘what have you earned from your visit abroad?’ The son showed a needle with a broken ear and a ‘ratti’. Pattinathar was shocked and said to him angrily, ‘All the young men who went along with you have brought precious gems; but, you have returned empty hand.’ At once the son asked Pattinathar, ‘What did you pray to the Lord when I was caught in the storm? Did you not pray for my safety? Do you prefer wealth over my well being? Father! Know that when you leave this world even these - the needle with the broken ear and the ‘rãtti’ - will be of no use to you. Then what to speak of wealth and relatives?’ Hit by these words, Pattinathar at once gave up everything. He left his home in search of God. Pattinathãr says, ‘Deem the relatives as only a crowd in a market place.’
Once, Pattinathar found a family crying over their dead. He sat outside this house and began to weep, too. The relatives of the dead stopped weeping and looked wonderingly at this stranger who wept for their dead. They enquired of him, ‘who are you? Why do you weep for the dead? Are you related to him?’ Pattinathar said, ‘No I do not weep for him. I weep for you. Those that are to die are weeping for the dead!’

sanjayah--Sanjaya; uvaca--said; evam--thus; uktva--saying; arjunah--Arjuna; sankhye--in the battlefield; ratha--chariot; upasthe--situated on; upavisat--sat down again; visrjya--keeping aside; sa-saram--along with arrows; capam--the bow; soka--by lamentation; samvigna--distressed; manasah--within the mind.

TRANSLATION:

Sanjaya said: Arjuna, having thus spoken on the battlefield, cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.

Bhagavad gita 1:45

yadi mam apratikaram
asastram sastra-panayah
dhartarastra rane hanyus
tan me ksemataram bhavet

TRANSLATION:

I would consider it better for the sons of Dhrtarastra to kill me unarmed and unresisting, rather than to fight with them.

TRANSLATION:

Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts, driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness.

utsanna-kula-dharmanam
manusyanam janardana
narake niyatam vaso
bhavatity anususruma

utsanna--spoiled; kula-dharmanam--of those who have the family traditions; manusyanam--of such men; janardana--O Krsna; narake--in hell; niyatam--always; vasah--residence; bhavati--it so becomes; iti--thus; anususruma--I have heard by disciplic succession.

TRANSLATION:

O Krsna, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell.

TRANSLATION:

Due to the evil deeds of the destroyers of family tradition, all kinds of community projects and family welfare activities are devastated.

Bhagavad Gita 1:41

sankaro narakayaiva
kula-ghnanam kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hy esam
lupta-pindodaka-kriyah

SYNONYMS

sankarah--such unwanted children; narakaya--for hellish life; eva--certainly; kula-ghnanam--of those who are killers of the family; kulasya--of the family; ca--also; patanti--fall down; pitarah--forefathers; hi--certainly; esam--of them; lupta--stopped; pinda--offerings; udaka--water; kriyah--performances.

TRANSLATION:

When there is increase of unwanted population, a hellish situation is created both for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. In such corrupt families, there is no offering of oblations of food and water to the ancestors.

Bhagavad Gita 1:40

adharmabhibhavat krsna
pradusyanti kula-striyah
strisu dustasu varsneya
jayate varna-sankarah

SYNONYMS

adharma--irreligion; abhibhavat--having become predominant; krsna--O Krsna; pradusyanti--become polluted; kula-striyah--family ladies; strisu--of the womanhood; dustasu--being so polluted; varsneya--O descendant of Vrsni; jayate--it so becomes; varna-sankarah--unwanted progeny.

TRANSLATION:

When irreligion is prominent in the family, O Krsna, the women of the family become corrupt, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vrsni, comes unwanted progeny.

Bhagavad Gita 1:39

kula-ksaye pranasyanti
kula-dharmah sanatanah
dharme naste kulam krtsnam
adharmo 'bhibhavaty uta

TRANSLATION:

With the destruction of dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligious practice.

TRANSLATION:

O Janardana, although these men, overtaken by greed, see no fault in killing one's family or quarreling with friends, why should we, with knowledge of the sin, engage in these acts?

TRANSLATION:

Sin will overcome us if we slay such aggressors. Therefore it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhrtarastra and our friends. What should we gain, O Krsna, husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?

Bhagavad Gita 1:37-38

yady apy ete na pasyanti
lobhopahata-cetasah
kula-ksaya-krtam dosam
mitra-drohe ca patakam

katham na jneyam asmabhih
papad asman nivartitum
kula-ksaya-krtam dosam
prapasyadbhir janardana

yadi--if; api--certainly; ete--they; na--do not; pasyanti--see; lobha--greed; upahata--overpowered; cetasah--the hearts; kula-ksaya--in killing the family; krtam--done; dosam--fault; mitra-drohe--quarreling with friends; ca--also; patakam--sinful reactions; katham--why; na--shall not; jneyam--know this; asmabhih--by us; papat--from sins; asmat--ourselves; nivartitum--to cease; kula-ksaya--the destruction of a dynasty; krtam--by so doing; dosam--crime; prapasyadbhih--by those who can see; janardana--O Krsna.

TRANSLATION:

O Janardana, although these men, overtaken by greed, see no fault in killing one's family or quarreling with friends, why should we, with knowledge of the sin, engage in these acts?

TRANSLATION:

O Govinda, of what avail to us are kingdoms, happiness or even life itself when all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed in this battlefield? O Madhusudana, when teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and all relatives are ready to give up their lives and properties and are standing before me, then why should I wish to kill them, though I may survive?

Bhagavad Gita 1:31

na ca sreyo 'nupasyami
hatva sva-janam ahave
na kankse vijayam krsna
na ca rajyam sukhani ca

TRANSLATION:

I do not see how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle, nor can I, my dear Krsna, desire any subsequent victory, kingdom, or happiness.

bhramativa ca me manah
nimittani ca pasyami
viparitani kesava


SYNONYMS

na--nor; ca--also; saknomi--am I able; avasthatum--to stay; bhramati--forgetting; iva--as; ca--and; me--my; manah--mind; nimittani--causes; ca--also; pasyami--I foresee; viparitani--just the opposite; kesava--O killer of the demon Kesi (Krsna).

I am now unable to stand here any longer. I am forgetting myself, and my mind is reeling. I foresee only evil, O killer of the Kesi demon.
